Joseph Pilates

Pilates

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s manly as rehabilitation for soldiers, but later also as strengthening exercises for ballet dancers. From the beginning, he called his training "contrology", which later become Pilates training after his death. Pilates emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement.

Pilates has a focus on the core which can basically be thought of as the 'powerhouse' of your body. Your core is the area between your shoulders and your pelvis (without your arms and legs) and involves all the muscles within this area.

As you develop your core strength you develop stability throughout your entire torso. As the trunk is properly stabilized, pressure on the back is relieved and the body is able to move freely and efficiently.

Pilates classes build strength, flexibility and lean muscle tone with an emphasis on lengthening the body and aligning the spine, rather than on bulking and shortening the muscles.

Classes marked with * can also be done online.

Initial Consult

Meet and greet- Your first time in the Studio is a one-on-one session where we discuss your goals and your previous exercise experience and any health issues you might have, and you will fill out a physical activity readiness questionnaire. We will discuss the basics of Pilates and do some introductory exercises so you will feel familiar with Pilates as you embark on your wonderful journey to fitness and health through Pilates.

Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates classes are a great introduction to Pilates, and I recommend everyone that hasn't done Pilates before to begin with Mat Pilates before commencing to the Reformer classes. The mat classes involve a series of exercises that focus on building core strength by using the deep abdominal muscles. We will learn and use the foundation of the Pilates technique for good posture and alignment of the body. Sometimes we will use equipment like Pilates circles and theraband.

Reformer Pilates

The reformer bed is a versatile piece of exercise equipment combining pulleys and springs with a gliding carriage for a challenging and well-rounded workout. The resistance from the pulley and springs develop and enhance strength, core stability and flexibility.

Pilates with Swiss Ball & Circle

This is a more advance class where we still do some exercises from the mat class, but we will make the class more advanced by using the Swiss ball and circle. This class is not suitable for anyone with injuries.

About Me

My name is Birgitta Thorborg, Director and Principal Instructor of The Swedish Pilates Studio. I’m a Personal Trainer with a Diploma in Fitness and Certificate in Pilates with Studio Pilates International.

Originally from Sweden, I have worked as a Personal Trainer since 2003. I found my passion in Pilates when I completed my Body Balance Instructor Certificate in 2004 and noticed many similarities with my ballet background. I started Ballet as a three year old and haven't stopped "exercising" since. I have competed in Bodybuilding and during my High School years I taught 4-6 year olds in gymnastics. With the background in ballet, I was taught from an early age about awareness and control of your body, which helped me develop a strong and balanced body for the Bodybuilding competitions.

As I began using Pilates with my PT clients I could see the fantastic benefits. Ever since I commenced my Pilates instructor course in 2013, I have dedicated myself to improve my technique and knowledge both for the benefit of my own body and also for the benefits of my clients. I have been involved with hundreds of clients with all sorts of challenges over the years, from illness to injuries and rehab. I work side-by-side with Physiotherapists and dietitian to achieve wonderful results for my clients in health and wellness.

I want to provide a place where you can meet like-minded people, gain inspiration and recharge your energy.

Welcome to The Swedish Pilates Studio,

Birgitta
